I haven’t grabbed something from the 990 series since the 990v4, and it’s finally time to step up! Today’s pickup are these New Balance 990v5 Blue Crab.
The v5 is the flagship inline Made in USA model and the 2020 sequel to the v4. Aside from moving a bit of the paneling and adding a rubbery plastic piece near the back, these are a very similar shoe to their predecessor.
These ship in a grey Made in USA box. Included are 2 Made in USA tags (one on each shoe) and this pair came with flat blue laces. The colorway I got is supposedly based off of the state crustacean for Maryland, the Blue Crab.
I had hesitated on these, as after I had the v4 I did not want to be disappointed with a mediocre sequel. Luckily I came around, as NB has improved the comfort and I think created a better looking shoe overall. I can definitely recommend picking up a pair of V5s if you like Made In USA New Balance and/or are a fan of the 990 series.
How Are The Materials?
We do get some quality suede and some bright 3M around most of the shoe. This is accented with a well-QC’d mesh and some microfiber overlays. Overall the materials are really good for a commonly available shoe and live up to the promise of a Made in USA pair of NB. While heritage models have spoiled me on New Balance materials, they still bring it on their newest sneakers like these, although not quite to the same level. But almost!
How Do They Fit?
These New Balance 990v5 are comfy at true to size. These return a generously wide fit at that size. I find these to fit roomy, but not sloppy or too big. All in all this is a great shoe for all-day wear.
